Do you experience pain or discomfort in your jaw when you speak, eat, or yawn? This may be a sign of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), a condition that affects the joints and muscles that connect your jawbone to your skull. TMJ can cause a variety of symptoms, including jaw pain, headaches, earaches, and difficulty chewing.

If you suffer from TMJ, you may be surprised to learn that practicing face yoga can help relieve your symptoms. In this article, we’ll discuss the benefits of doing face yoga for the TMJ muscle group and how it can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ.

The TMJ muscles are a group of muscles that are responsible for opening and closing your jaw. When these muscles are overworked or strained, it can cause pain and discomfort in your jaw, as well as headaches and other symptoms. Fortunately, practicing face yoga can help strengthen and stretch these muscles, reducing the strain on them and alleviating the associated symptoms.

One effective face yoga exercise for the TMJ muscles is the Jaw Release. To perform this exercise, sit in a comfortable position with your shoulders relaxed. Then, slowly open your mouth as wide as you can, stretching your jaw muscles. Hold the position for a few seconds, then slowly release your jaw back to its starting position. Repeat this exercise five to ten times.

Another effective exercise is the Tongue to Roof of Mouth. To do this exercise, start by relaxing your jaw and placing the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth. Then, slowly open your mouth while keeping your tongue in place, feeling the stretch in your TMJ muscles. Hold the position for a few seconds, then slowly release your jaw back to its starting position. Repeat this exercise five to ten times.

In addition to these exercises, practicing face yoga can help improve your posture and reduce tension in your neck and shoulders, which can contribute to TMJ symptoms. By practicing face yoga regularly, you can strengthen and stretch the muscles that support your jaw, reducing the strain on the TMJ muscles and alleviating associated pain and discomfort.
